Casa Monti Hotel Review – The Points Guy

If the “Golden Girls” were non-Italians, they would feel right at home at Casa Monti, a boutique hotel in the heart of Rome’s oldest quarter. Thanks to its endless mix of patterns, textures, prints and tchotch fabrics, the new hotel feels like an old friend, “a friend and confidante”, if you will.

Immediately welcoming and endlessly charming, Casa Monti, found on the picture-perfect cobbled Via Panisperna, is a feast for the senses and a beautiful addition to the store boutique fashion. The hotel scene is booming in Rome.

Here’s everything you need to know about staying at Casa Monti.

What is Casa Monti?

Casa Monti is a small boutique hotel with only 26 rooms and 10 suites. Leitmotiva family-owned French hotel company with other boutique businesses in Paris and Megeve, France. The hotel’s interiors feature design crafted by Laura Gonzales and inspired by the Italian concept of “sprezzatura”, a kind of formless style where everything works together even though each individual part gives you know something else; it’s something that can’t be learned, many Italians say.

Casa Monti is a small player in Rome’s burgeoning hotel scene, which has recently seen the openings of Edition, Bulgari Hotel and Six Senses, among others. But what makes the hotel special is its size – and its location in Monti, a neighborhood that dates back to ancient Rome (the Colosseum is a few minutes’ walk away).

Today, Monti is a neighborhood-like neighborhood full of artists, vintage and boutique shops, cafes, and nightlife.

Accommodation at Casa Monti

Casa Monti has 10 different room and suite types, from entry-level Cozy Rooms, perfect for solo travelers, to multi-room suites with plenty of space to spread out.

During my late August stay, I checked into the charming Superior Room with windows overlooking Via Panisperna. At about 269 square feet, my room had a plush king-size bed against a brightly wallpapered wall with a matching headboard and even a matching tissue box on the nightstand.

There is also a Bluetooth speaker on the nightstand, an iPad containing hotel information and books on the coffee table. Above the stands I found international power outlets, including USB outlets, conveniently located.

Across from the bed is a striped couch, a TV (with Chromecast!), lots of fun yellow patterns as seen on the headboard, a small armchair, and a small coffee table.

I informed the hotel in advance that the day of our arrival was my husband’s birthday, and they pulled out all the stops and had a beautiful chocolate birthday note and dessert waiting in room.

With the photo above, you can feel all the textures and patterns throughout the room… sprezzatura.

In the room’s small entryway, the minibar area features a teapot with various tea options, a Nespresso coffee maker, plenty of glassware, and a small refrigerator stocked with local beers, spirits, and other casual fare. of the bar. A nice surprise were some free Italian snacks, like mixed nuts and dried chili.

There is also a large wardrobe in the entry area as well as a safe.

In the bathroom, deep red tiles contrast with neutral earth tones and beautiful marble in the shower and on the vanity. The room also has a toilet, bidet and soft towel rack.

The water pressure in the rain shower is perfect. And after combining that with the comforting scent of Susanne Kaufmann soaps and shampoos designed exclusively for Casa Monti, forcing yourself out of a relaxing shower is a real feat.

And although my room didn’t have a balcony or terrace, the view out my tall skinny window of Via Panisperna was truly amazing.

What we ate and drank at Casa Monti

Casa Monti has two bars, a lobby bar (pictured above) and a small rooftop bar with indoor and outdoor seating, plus a restaurant on the main floor.

Upon arrival, we enjoyed refreshing welcome cocktails at the colorful lobby bar, aptly called Casa Monti Bar. It’s full of pattern and texture, like dark wood accents, zebra-print upholstery on the walls, artful lamps, and a bold mirrored ceiling.

Casa Monti Rooftop is another eclectic experience with a menu of cocktails, wine, beer and snacks (think: mixed cheeses and fried zucchini blossoms). Again, interior design is a combination of this, that and everything in between. If anything, the rooftop bar shows that the hotel’s designer, Laura Gonzales, is truly a master of her craft. What could easily be gaudy or flashy turns into something ornate and unexpected— sprezzatura.

Even though I didn’t have a reservation, I was still able to reserve a table outside after just a few minutes of waiting, but I recommend making a reservation to be safe. At my shiny blue desk, I can’t necessarily look out at Rome when sitting down, but the view of the city is magical when standing up. They were even better with my La Fioraia cocktail (18 euros/$19) made with flower-infused Tanqueray gin, raspberry bushes and lemon.

For my husband’s birthday dinner, we sat outside at Casa Monti Ristorante, a restaurant serving seasonal Roman dishes with slight regional variations by Sicilian chef Umberto Tuccio.

Highlights of our dinner included the tempting caprese salad with burrata on a tower of fresh summer tomatoes and basil (16 euros/$17), the simple but delicious tonnarelli cacio e pepe (21 euros/$22 ) and zucchini risotto with shrimp gambero rosso (30 euros/$32). The food was delicious, the service was great and we had a great time enjoying the fresh Roman air, even if it was a bit warm for late August.

Amenities and things to do

Casa Monti may stand out for its design at first glance, but the list of things to do on the property focuses on eating, drinking and sleeping. The hotel does not have a gym but does have the only Susanne Kaufmann spa in Rome. Sadly, I didn’t have time to visit the spa during my short trip to the Eternal City, but those with time can opt for treatments like the 50-minute alkaline deep cleansing facial (135 euro/$141) or 80 minutes Susanne Kaufmann’s signature body treatment including body scrub and massage (190 euro/$200).

Insider tips for staying at Casa Monti

  • In my experience, the best way to explore Rome is on foot, and Casa Monti is located right in the heart of the city. You can quickly walk from the hotel to the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Trevi Fountain and beyond. Just remember to bring comfortable walking shoes as Rome can also be steep.
  • Shopping in Monti is serious business. I found some of my old favorites at neighborhood stores. But my favorite store in Rome is SuperOdra, a concept store on Via Leonina, just a few minutes from the hotel.
  • If you’re traveling with family or children, the Family Suite features a master bedroom with sofa bed and bathtub, plus a second bedroom that sleeps up to six people total.

Accessibility

Casa Monti has two accessible rooms and wheelchair-accessible elevators (although they aren’t necessarily the largest elevators I’ve encountered). Public spaces are also accessible for wheelchairs and people with limited mobility.

That said, I always recommend that guests who may need an accessible room contact the hotel directly to confirm available rooms.

Bottom line

Casa Monti is one of the most charming boutique hotels I’ve stayed at in recent years. It’s a little chic, absolutely delightful, and located in one of my favorite neighborhoods in the entire world.

If you want a glamorous place to stay right in the heart of the action, look no further than this chic boutique, magazine-worthy bars and friendly staff. And if you find yourself on a rooftop terrace sipping a cocktail overlooking Rome’s seven hills, you might hear the voice of another golden girl, Lizzie McGuire, ringing in your head: “This is what Dreams are made of.”
