Civilization VII release date and gameplay revealed

2K and Firaxis have revealed more information about Sid Meier’s Civilization VII at gamescom 2024. After first releasing a trailer at Summer Game Fest 2024, the companies revealed the release date and gameplay details for the new game at the European video game event.

A new trailer for Civilization VII first appeared at gamescom 2024 Opening Night Live stream. It shows a quick montage of in-engine footage, including buildings from various civilizations and units from various eras. The main highlight of this trailer is the release date announcement.

The new game will be available on February 11, 2025. While previous entries have typically come out first on PC with consoles like Nintendo Switch get them later, the ending of this trailer suggests that Civilization VII will be available simultaneously not only on PC but also on PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch and Xbox platforms.

Soon after, Firaxis organized a Official Game Introduction dedicated stream for the game on the series’ official YouTube channel. The new game will feature civilizations tied to each of the three different eras, and the leader character the player chooses will no longer be tied to their original civilization.

For example, while Hatshepsut is initially associated with Egypt, the player can choose to have her lead the Aksum civilization instead in the Ancient Age. As the game progresses through the ages, the player will have to choose a different civilization for Hatshepsut to lead, such as Songhai or Mongol in the Age of Discovery and Buganda in the Modern Age.

2K has also updated the game Steam Page with bonus editions that offer both in-game content at launch and post-launch DLC that 2K will release in the future. Those who pre-purchased any edition of the game—including the pre-release standard edition—can receive the Shawnee Native American civilization and Tecumseh as a playable leader.

Sid Meier’s Civilization VII will be available on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X, and Xbox One on February 11, 2025.
