Daly City Opens Affordable Housing for Teachers at School

Daly City, California, is looking for local teachers in a big way! On August 6, San Mateo County opened affordable housing for teachers on the campus of an elementary school.

Based on CBS NewsA car park is located between the school and affordable housing, meaning it is within walking distance of work. There are also 56 apartments and access to a range of amenities, including laundry facilities, a community room, a courtyard and a children’s play area.

Daly City Mayor Juslyn Manalo speaks at the grand opening of Eastmoor Heights:

“The school is right there; your home is right here!” I mean, it’s great to have our teachers and staff right in our community and not have to live two hours away.”

Daly City is not new but it is true teacher support

County voters approved a $33 million bond measure for the housing complex in 2018. At the time, staff turnover was reported to be 25 percent.

In recent years, teachers and school staff have reportedly begun moving out of Daly City to find housing. For some who remain in roles at the school, the commute can be as long as two hours.

The new housing units have also attracted interest and applications from out-of-state applicants. Rents for approved teachers will be capped at 50 percent below market value at the time of occupancy.

Meanwhile, earlier this year, the city opened another affordable housing complex on the grounds of the Jefferson Union High School District. This one has 122 apartments.

Realtor.com reports The median home list price in San Mateo County, California is $1.6 million in June 2024.

One teacher, Priscilla Patalinghug, was faced with the decision to leave the city but was eventually accepted into the new complex. She and her two children now live in the apartment, meaning they get to stay in a city they “love,” along with its “weather” and “people.”
