Duolingo to Debut AI Video Calling Chatbot, Mini-Games, and More at Duocon 2024- Details
Duolingo, the popular language learning platform, announced a slew of new features at its annual Duocon 2024 event. These updates include AI-powered tools and expanded learning services, aimed at improving user experiences in language, music, and math education. One of the highlights was the launch of an AI chatbot, which allows users to engage in real-life conversations via simulated video calls.
Duocon 2024: AI-powered video calling feature
At the conference, Duolingo revealed that its new video calling feature“Video Call with Lily,” is now available to Duolingo Max subscribers. The tool allows users to chat with Lily, a popular virtual character, providing an interactive, immersive experience. The company explains that the feature adapts to the user’s skill level, making it accessible to both beginners and advanced learners. Currently, the feature supports conversations in English, Spanish, and French, with plans to expand further.

Duolingo Max, which launched last year, includes AI-powered learning features and is currently available in a handful of countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Ireland, and New Zealand. The company plans to roll out the subscription to more regions in the future. The subscription costs $29.99 a month or $239.99 a year for a family plan. The goal of the feature is to create an environment where users can practice conversations in real-world situations, improving their language skills.

Interactive learning with Duolingo adventures
Another big announcement was the launch of “Adventures,” a mini-game feature designed to help users practice language skills through interactive storylines. These storylines simulate real-life situations, such as ordering food or navigating tourist checkpoints. Through these scenarios, users can practice language in a functional context, making their learning more realistic and relevant.

Additionally, Duolingo is expanding its music learning offerings through a partnership with Loog, a maker of portable musical instruments. The partnership introduces a three-octave digital piano that allows users to practice music lessons directly on the platform. The Duolingo x Loog piano costs $249 and is available for pre-order on the company’s website.
These new features underscore Duolingo’s continued efforts to innovate and improve educational services for users around the world.
