The Eight Sleep Pod 4 is a temperature-regulating mattress cover that monitors your body as you sleep, with a hub that pumps cool or warm water into the pod to help you stay in nodding land longer.

When I tested its predecessor, the Eight Sleep Pod 3 (7/10, WIRED recommended), I was wary of the billionaire biohacking rumor, but it won me over. Sadly, better sleep doesn’t come cheap. The Pod 4 Pod and Hub for a Queen Bed costs $2,599, but you also have to subscribe to Autopilot for a year for an additional $199. If you’re already subscribed, you can transfer that plan to the new Pod, but you can no longer buy an Eight Sleep Pod without subscribing to Autopilot. The UK Super King I tested costs £2,699, with a year of Autopilot costing £199. It’s a real investment, but getting a good night’s sleep can be transformative.

Case and Hub The Eight Sleep Pod 4 comes in two large pods. The mattress cover has a rubber tube inside and a layer of soft, plush, dark material on top. It is stretchy to fit snugly on your mattress and the tube should be routed from the top down to insert into the center. The Hub is about the size of a desktop computer, with a fabric front and a large number 8 logo. The center is the brain of the operation, it cools or heats the water and pumps it around the lid.

Setup with the Pod 4 is similar but much faster than with the Pod 3. You pull the cylinder out from the top of the shaft and fill it up to the full line. The priming process has been reduced to about 10 minutes compared to several hours for the previous version. You connect the hub to your Wi-Fi using the mobile app. The pod of the Pod 4 is much more comfortable than the Pod 3, and the hub is much quieter. It never breaks 30 decibels when measuring. It makes a subtle humming sound, like a white noise while sleeping.
