Elon Musk ponders buying MSNBC: “How much will it cost?”

Elon Musk, the billionaire head of SpaceX, Tesla and X, is considering — according to a series of memes shared on his social media platforms this weekend — adding another company to that portfolio: MSNBC.

“Hey @elonmusk I have the funniest idea ever!!!” Donald Trump Jr. wrote on Friday X, on a post that said news network MSNBC was up for sale. “How much does it cost?” Musk replied, more minutes later“Most likely to have the most amusing results, especially if ironic,” followed by a laughing emoji.

Their posts appear later news on Wednesday, MSNBC’s parent company, Comcast, is looking to spin the network into a new entity that includes MSNBC, CNBC, USA Network, Oxygen, E!, Syfy and Golf Channel. While it’s unclear what the future holds for MSNBC under Comcast’s new strategy, that hasn’t stopped Musk and those in his orbit from floating the idea that the billionaire would buy the left-leaning network.

The Daily Wire’s Michael Knowles responded to Trump Jr.’s post, “If you need a replacement for Rachel MaddowI know a guy. Podcasts Joe Rogan also participated, and offered to replace Maddow, MSNBC’s top anchor who has been a journalist for two decades. “If you buy MSNBC, I want Rachael Maddow’s job. I will wear the same outfit and glasses, and I will tell the same lies.”

“How great will this be?” musk replied with star emoji. “Deal,” Musk replied a few hours later. Fire emoji. Rocket emoji. Laughing emoji.

Musk, President-elect Donald Trump appointed to lead the Department of Government Effectiveness, or DOGEwith former Republican presidential hopeful Vivek RamaswamySpend the next day or so sharing meme about the potential acquisition, including more information about Maddow himself.

“The years go by so quickly,” Musk with annotations a meme titled “The Evolution of Rachel Maddow.” It has anchor photos from 1990 to 2020 and the 2024 photo is of the businessman Mark Cuban.

Then there is a place where he replied to a headline from conservative Christian news satire website The Babylon Bee reading, “Musk announces plan to buy MSNBC and turn it into a news network,” saying, “Crazy idea, but it can succeed!”

Other accounts posted that the new owner of MSNBC could be Trump, the Vice President-elect J.D. VanceRogan and Musk — X owners responded with a laughing emoji.
