Exclusive Preview: ‘Severance’ Season Two is a true masterpiece
Future goals
In season two, Mark must discover what happened to Ms. Casey, while also reconciling his feelings for Helly — unaware that her alter ego is one of the leaders manipulating the episode’s staff. Lumon group. Ms. Cobel continues her plot despite being sidelined by Lumon, and the overall mystery of the company’s operations becomes even more important as employees must answer for insubordination and violations of terms of their severance agreement.
Growth plan = ambitious
quit has created a devoted fan base who speculate and analyze episodes on a forensic basis for clues to the nature of Lumon Industries and the show’s broader meaning. What directions will part two explore?
Erickson: I think things get darker. We really wanted to put our heroes in a scarier place because part one ended with them poking the bear. They form this little rebellion and they may have a little success with it, but the question in part two is: What happens when the bear rears its head? What are the consequences of this victory that they have? I think, if you don’t give much, the consequences will be dire.
The machine is quiet: When [season one] came out, it was interesting to see all the reactions and how people learned about the theory. We want to continue the story where it left off. We’ll bring Innies into the Outie world and then answer some questions at the end of the season. Hopefully we keep it mysterious enough and intriguing enough that people want to continue following the story.
Erickson: In season one, Innie is basically a child. In some ways, they are adults, but in terms of experience, they are still kids, having your first love, and learning things about yourself. Part two, it’s a little more of a coming of age story. You have more of a sense of finding your own autonomy and deciding who you are going to be, as opposed to being told who you are.
Character Build = Doubled
What does it mean for the core characters that their inner parts have information that their outer parts do not?
Quiet people: For me, throughout this series it has always been about Mark trying to grieve his wife. But then we found out that his wife was alive. Will Outie Mark find out that Innie Mark knows? And how will Outie Mark solve that problem? At the same time, I think we’ve developed a relationship with Innie Mark and Helly on the inside that feels like it’s going somewhere. So there is a natural tension growing between Outie Mark’s interests and Innie Mark’s interests.
