Frontier Airlines announced 22 new routes opening in December

Even as Frontier Airlines executives say they are seeing the low-cost carrier’s finances improve, the airline is making another sweeping network adjustment as Winter months are approaching.

The Denver-based low-cost airline announced nearly two dozen routes on Tuesday, each launching in mid-December.

As part of the changes, Frontier will launch several new flights between New England and Florida. It will also double thanks to rapid growth in cities like Chicago, Houston, Cleveland and Cincinnati.

And the airline will begin all-new service to one of Colorado’s most popular ski destinations: Just before the holidays, the airline will launch three new routes from major U.S. cities to Regional Airports Eagle County (EGE) near Vail.

In total, Frontier will launch 22 new routes between December 17 and December 20. Of those routes, the airline has previously flown about half within the past decade. The rest are completely new to the airline.

The biggest winner? It’s a tie between Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), each of which has four new spots on Frontier’s route map.

The new service adds to Frontier’s already rapid growth at both airports. This year, the total number of airline seats departing from O’Hare will increase 125% compared to 2023, according to data from aviation analytics firm Cirium. Meanwhile, Frontier will operate more than 4,300 flights from LAX this year after not serving the airport in 2023.

Another winner in Frontier’s latest update: California’s Palm Springs International Airport (PSP), which returns to the carrier’s route map for the first time since 2021 with flights to both Denver and San Francisco.

After consecutive quarters of lackluster financial results, CEO Barry Biffle recently noted that the carrier is starting to see some more promising results — coinciding with many U.S. carriers cutting reduce their schedules to better meet customer needs.

“Over the last six weeks, we’re seeing a pretty good improvement relative to what we expected,” Biffle told Wall Street analysts at the Morgan Stanley Laguna Conference Sept. 11.

For 2024, Frontier announced 114 new routes through early August — and what’s changing has continued since then.

The airline did not specify what, if any, route cuts might coincide with this latest round of changes by Frontier. Since the beginning of the year, the carrier has regularly cut many routes as part of its larger network reform plan.
