French President Emmanuel Macron took a huge risk by calling early elections last month, after a poor showing in the European Parliament saw his party trounced by the far right and far left. Commentators debated whether the decision was courageous or short-sighted.

The second round of parliamentary elections yesterday saw the Nouveau Front Populaire, a coalition of left-wing parties ranging from communists to moderate centre-leftists, win a surprise victory, pushing Macron’s centrist coalition into second place and allowing the far-right Rassemblement National to fall into third place.

How effectively can a “republican front” of left-wing and centrist voices counter the far-right threat and How will centrists coexist with far-leftists?
