Guide to All the Remaining Dragons in ‘House of the Dragon’

As the war between Team Black and Team Green really began and Rhaenyra was more or less isolated on Dragonstone, we saw less of Syrrax. But just because Syrax was away from the battlefield didn’t mean she wasn’t busy. At the end of season one, Syrrax laid a bunch of eggs, some of which were stolen by Daemon in episode eight of season one. Luckily, Daemon didn’t get all of Syrrax’s eggs. She gave some to her granddaughter Rhaena. (Phoebe Campbell) to protect and watch over.

Dream

Another dragon who foiled Daemon’s evil plot was Dreamfyre. She was originally bonded to the OG Princess Rhaena Targaryen—not to be confused with House of the Dragon character Rhaenyra, Rhaenys, or Daemon and Laena’s daughter, also named Rhaena. In season one, Daemon stole one of Dreamfyre’s dragon eggs for his unborn child. Blue and white, Dreamfyre laid many eggs throughout her life and bonded with Queen Helaena Targaryen (Saban side) of the Green Company, sister of King Aegon II.

Caraxes

Originally belonging to King Aemon Targaryen, Prince of Dragonstone, Caraxes is described in Fire and Blood is “the most ferocious of all the young dragons in Dragonpit.” According to Fire and BloodAfter Aemon’s death, Caraxes became attached to another fierce Targaryen, Daemon, a nephew of King Aemon. A red dragon, Caraxes was nicknamed the Blood Wyrm for his bloodthirsty and cruel nature. In season one, Daemon used these qualities to his advantage, using Caraxes to steal a dragon egg from Syrrax. In season two, Daemon rides Caraxes into Harrenhalwhere he quickly took the castle. By midway House of the Dragon In season two, Caraxes is sitting in Harrenhal, threatening the villagers into swearing fealty to Queen Rhaenyra.

Sea Smoke

Don’t forget Seasmoke. The grey dragon belongs to Laenor Velaryon (John MacMillan), Queen Rhaenyra’s late first husband, has been out of action for a while, but he may be back sooner than you think. After fighting in the Battle of the Stepstones with Ser Laenor, Seasmoke was left behind when Laenor faked his own death and escaped across the Narrow Sea with his male lover, Ser Qarl. Without a rider, Rhaenyra said that Seasmoke was “getting restless” at the start of season two. But Seasmoke could soon be flying again. At the end of season two episode 5, Rhaenyra and her son Jace devised a plan to find distant relatives with Targaryen blood who could be trained to become dragon riders.

Vermax

Speaking of Targaryen blood: Vermax is Jaeharys Targaryen, aka Jace, the eldest son of Queen Rhaenyra. Jace and Vermax bonded in episode six of season one, when the young Jace almost found himself on the wrong end of a “Dracarys” order. By episode ten, Jace and Vermax had bonded partly out of grief: Jace’s brother Luke and his dragon Arrax had been killed by Aemond. In season two, Jace vowed to avenge his brother’s death and help his mother ascend to the throne, bringing Vermax to the Freys in a successful attempt to sway them to support Rhaenyra in the ongoing war.

Moon Dancer

A small green dragon, Moondancer belongs to Baela Targaryen (Bethany Antonia), daughter of the late Laena Velaryon and Daemon Targaryen. In part two of House of the DragonRhaenyra assigned Baela to patrol Ser Criston Cole’s company as they marched toward Harrenhal. Riding on Moondancer, Baela tasked Criston, Gwayne Hightower (Freddie Fox), and everyone was quite scared as she chased them into the woods.

Tyraxes

Tyraxes belongs to the youngest son of Rhaenya and Laenor: Joffrey Velaryon. A young man who resembles his rider, Tyrax is described as “just a chick” in episode three of season two. Chicks grow up, however—and this one is firmly on the side of the Black.

Storm clouds

Tyraxes is accompanied by Stormcloud, the dragon that belonged to Aegon III, aka Aegon the Younger—the son of Rhaenyra and Daemon. (Remember: Rhaenyra married her uncle, Daemon, after helping her first husband fake his own death.) Both Tyraxes and Stormcloud accompany Rhaena Velaryon to the Vale, where they are given a cold reception by Lady Arryn, who is not pleased that such young dragons are being asked to protect her and the Eyrie. “Stormcloud and Tyraxes are young, but they will grow,” Rhaenyra says. Who knows how big Stormcloud and Tyraxes will become when the war heats up at the end of season two!

Worm

A large bronze dragon that once belonged to King Jaeherys I Targaryen, King Viserys’ predecessor, Vermitor was an old dragon, nearly 100 years old at the beginning of the Dance of Dragons. Despite being one of the oldest and largest remaining dragons (only Vhagar and Balerion were larger, according to Fire and Blood), Vermithor is currently riderless and living somewhere on Dragonstone. In the season one finale, Daemon attempts to find and conquer Vermithor, but fails. But just because Daemon can’t find Vermithor, that doesn’t mean he’s not out there. At the end of season two’s fifth episode, Jace tells his mother, Rhaenrya, that there are two dragons big enough to take on Vhagar: Vermitor and Silverwing. All they need is riders for them.

Silver Wings

The other half of Jace’s master plan, Silverwing is another large silver dragon that is currently untamed and lives on Dragonstone. Often paired with Vermithor, Silverwing was formerly ridden by Alysanne Targaryen, queen and sister of King Jaehaerys I.

While that’s all the named dragons left in Westeros, Daemon did mention in the season one epilogue that there are wild dragons nesting on Dragonstone, waiting to be ridden. Time will tell how they’ll affect the big fight between Team Black and Team Green, and which dragons will be left standing when the dust settles.
