Kamala Harris on Wednesday stayed away from the President Joe Biden and lashed out at her Republican presidential opponent Donald Trump in a heated interview with Fox News host Brett Baier.
“Let me be clear, my presidency will not be a continuation of Joe Biden’s presidency,” Harris said on the conservative news network, after Baier asked her if the vice president would different from the incumbent or not.
“And like every new president, I will bring with me life experience, professional experience and fresh ideas,” the Democratic candidate said.
The 26-minute interview focused largely on immigration, and Harris again blamed Trump for killing a bipartisan bill to address the crisis at the southern border.
The interview was tense from the first exchange, when Baier repeatedly interrupted Harris’ opening answers on immigration. “You have to let me finish… I am in the process of responding to the point you are making and I want to finish,” Harris said at the outset.
These are the most memorable moments
- On whether she owes the families of three women killed by undocumented immigrants an apology:
“I think we’ve got a broken immigration system that, by the way, goes beyond Donald Trump’s administration — even before that. Let’s all be honest about it. I take no pride in saying that this is a perfect immigration system. I used to be like that.” clear. I think we all think it needs to be fixed.”
- About a new Trump ad about taxpayer money being used for gender reassignment
“I think [Trump] spent $20 million on those ads, trying to create a sense of fear among voters, because he really has no plan in this election to focus on the needs of the American people . $20 million for that ad, for an issue that deals with the biggest issues affecting the American people, is really quite far-fetched. And again, his policies are no different.”
- In terms of how she differs from Biden
“I represent a new generation of leadership. For example, I’m someone who hasn’t spent the majority of my career in Washington, DC. I invite opinions, whether it’s from Republicans who are supporting for me, those who were just on stage.” with me a few minutes ago, with the business and others who can contribute to the decisions I make.”
- On Trump’s rhetoric to voters
“He’s the one who talks about the enemy within, in, The enemy within, speaking of the American people. Suggesting that he would turn the US army to attack the American people. You and I both know that he has talked about turning the American military on the American people. He talked about going after people participating in peaceful protests. He talked about locking people up because they disagreed with him. This is a democracy, and in a democracy, the President of the United States, in the United States of America, has to be willing to handle criticism without saying he’s going to jail people for doing it .”
- About whether Trump is fit to be president or not
“Over the past decade, I and certainly the Republicans who have shared the stage with me, the president’s former chief of staff, Donald Trump, former secretaries of defense, national security advisers and his vice president, it was clear to him that he was unfit to serve, that he was unstable, that he was dangerous, and people were exhausted with a man who claimed to be a leader who devoted time to demean and engage in personal grievances and that is about him and the American people.
