Hawaiian Airlines cuts Austin service, begins network integration with Alaska

Hawaiian Airlines is ending service on one of its newest routes.

The Honolulu-based airline will stop flying between Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) and Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) on March 26, 2025, as seen for the first time in the calendar submitted by Cirium and later confirmed by an airline spokesperson.

This 3,764-mile route from Austin to HNL is launched during the pandemic in April 2021 and comes at a time when AUS growth is quite hot.

Most major US airlines increased service to the Texas capital during and since the coronavirus pandemic, but now Hawaiian is the latest to exit the market.

American Airlines also made a big change in Austin when it switched from expanding its blockbuster schedule to one deep cuts that thing Austin service cuts to almost pre-expansion levels.

In Hawaiian’s case, the airline declined to share specific information about the problem with the Austin route. Instead, they touted the initial network merger with Alaska Airlines as the reason for the cuts.

the merger between Alaska and Hawaii moved one step closer to completion earlier this year when the US Department of Justice decided not to block the deal. Airlines have been asked make some concessions to the Department of Transportation to finalize the deal, but at least those compromises are largely passenger-friendly.

While the legal formalities are being completed, the two airlines have begun integrating their networks.

“As we begin the exciting work of integrating our combined networks to offer our passengers more flights and connections to more more cities, we are making some initial adjustments to some routes.”

Going forward, Hawaiian said it will continue to serve the Honolulu to Austin market through one-stop connections, primarily through San Diego and Seattle.

These one-stop connections are provided by the traditional Alaska Airlines network, which provides service from Austin to both San Diego and Seattle. The two airlines apparently believe there is not enough ongoing demand to keep the Austin to Hawaii market operational; or at least, they believe that loyal people won’t mind the relationship.

Once Hawaiian withdraws its Austin service, the airline will release an Airbus A330 (the wide-body jet currently operating the route).

As part of the network integration between the merged airlines, Hawaiian will upgrade one of Alaska Airlines’ five daily Boeing 737s flying between Seattle and Honolulu.

Hawaii’s Airbus A330 will carry more passengers and expanded cargo capacity, and the change will take effect April 22, 2025.

On June 12, 2025, Hawaiian Airlines will also stop flying between San Diego and Kahului, and Alaska Airlines will add a second daily flight on the route.

Airlines have promised more changes to their networks in the coming months. The airlines didn’t reveal much, but they reiterated the changes in a statement: “We look forward to sharing more news soon on how we are optimizing our network to deliver for our customers.” more flights between Hawaii and North America and across the rest of us.” combined global network.”
