Governor of California, Gavin Newsomis said to have issued an executive order aimed at eliminating homeless encampments in California.

Based on CNNGovernor Newsom issued the executive order on Thursday, July 25. The news outlet reported that the law calls on “state officials to begin dismantling homeless encampments.”

“This executive order directs state agencies to take urgent action to address dangerous encampments while supporting and assisting the individuals living in them — and provides guidance for cities and counties to do the same,” Newson reportedly explained. “There are simply no more excuses. It’s time for everyone to do their part.”

The news outlet reported that as of last month, the homeless population in Los Angeles was approximately 45,253. Meanwhile, the homeless population in Los Angeles County was approximately 75,312. In total, the news outlet alleged, the state “has the largest homeless population.”

Fox 35 Orlando The agency reported that despite Newsom’s order, “the decision to dismantle refugee camps will be up to local governments.” The agency added that Newsom cannot force local governments to implement his order. However, he and his administration “can apply pressure by withholding money [from] counties and cities.”

How are California regions reacting to the Governor’s decision?

Based on CNNParisa Safarzadeh, a spokeswoman for San Francisco Mayor London Breed, has said efforts to eliminate refugee camps in the area have made good progress.

“Our city camp teams and our street outreach staff have been out every day bringing people into homes and clearing out the encampments,” Safarzadeh reportedly told the news outlet. “This is why we are seeing the lowest number of city tents on our streets in the last five years.”

Additionally, the outlet noted that efforts to “clear” encampments have also been launched in the Venice, Hollywood, and Skid Row areas of Los Angeles. However, CNN added that those efforts have seen “temporary declines” in homeless numbers before the numbers rebound.

Ohio & Florida Pass New Laws Regarding Homeless People

California is not the only state with laws related to homelessness. As Shade room As previously reported, in March, a bill was sent to Governor Ron DeSantis with an initiative to ban homeless people from sleeping on public property.

Meanwhile, in June, the Supreme Court ruled that homeless people in Ohio can now be fined for sleeping outdoors, according to CNN.
