Hotel labor strikes end in major US cities – but continue in San Francisco


New labor contracts are coming to many top U.S. tourist destinations, which have been grappling with strikes by hotel workers for nearly two months.

Nearly 2,000 workers reached a preliminary agreement on a new labor contract ended the strike at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort. The move comes as workers have reached new labor contract agreements in cities like Boston and San Diego at hotels that have brand relationships with Marriott, Hilton and Hyatt.

Across the country and localities Unite here Chapters representing hotel workers – including housekeepers, front desk staff, cooks, dishwashers, servers, bartenders, waiters and door staff – negotiated to have higher wages, better working conditions and more employee protections. Many hotel labor contracts expire on August 31.

While signs point to momentum in favor of hotel workers, there are still ongoing strikes in the Bay Area. In San Francisco, indefinite strikes by hotel workers are currently underway at the Grand Hyatt San Francisco, Hilton San Francisco Union Square, The Westin St. Francis San Francisco on Union Square, San Francisco Marriott Union Square and Palace Hotel, a Luxury Collection Hotel, San Francisco – also affiliated with Marriott.

“Momentum is building as hotel workers across the United States fight for fair wages and fair workloads,” said Gwen Mills, international president of Unite Here. in a statement. “Our recent agreements demonstrate that jobs at Hilton, Hyatt and Marriott can be really good, jobs that support families, and strikes will continue until workers at all Our cities win contracts that deliver on that promise.”

Spokesperson for major brands such as Hilton And Hyatt previously told TPG that contingency plans were in place to minimize disruption during a strike. But Unite Here warns guests that services will likely be paused while hotels operate with core staff.

Pickup lines will run outside affected hotels up to 24 hours a day, and hotels may suspend some services while operating with limited staff. If you have an upcoming trip to one of the affected hotels, call before arriving at the hotel to see if the strike will affect operations.
