How NetherRealm makes Ghostface work in the world of Mortal Kombat 1 – PlayStation.Blog

Ghostface is coming to Mortal Kombat 1 starting November 19, and as long as otherworldly guest characters have been a feature of our games, Woodsboro’s own serial killer has been included. into the mix like a dream. Horror villains have always been a great fit for the gritty, macabre, over-the-top universe of Mortal Kombat, and it was only a matter of time before Scream’s anonymous assailant, Ghostface, became available.

That time has come, and while designing Ghostface for Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns, we had to answer a series of questions. How does this horror movie villain translate into a fighting game? And how will Ghostface look, sound and act?

Of course, the overall look is very familiar: classic mask, cape and knife. Even so, this poses surprising challenges in a fast-paced video game. Most costumes have a physics-based fabric component, but no other costume is entirely fabric. And in addition to the robe being made of soft material from head to toe, there were long ghostly strips of fabric running along it. These are just the types of things that can easily be done by surprise and caught up in the heat of the kombat, unless proper care is taken. That being said, our technical artists and animators worked back and forth to iron out every problem, ensuring that Ghostface’s iconic goofballs looked their best.

While Mortal Kombat is famous for its masked ninjas, our kombatants feature intricate facial animations that highlight the action. Even among our masked characters, there are often outfit or equipment options that reveal the entire face during gameplay, if you so desire. But that’s not the case here, because the rigid, emotionless mask is the characteristic detail of the outfit. In the absence of facial expressions, we took care to capture additional character movements during motion capture and in-game animations so that, just like in the movies, a lot can be seen. can appear with just the slightest tilt of the head or gesture—malice or humor, frustration or excitement, anger or reserve.

And sound is just as important as movement. Roger L. Jackson returns to reprise his recurring role as the voice of Ghostface in the films, arguably the most memorable recurring theme in the series. Thanks to easily accessible voice manipulation devices in the fictional town of Woodsboro, California, various psychopaths over the years have disguised their own voices by using the modulated voices of Roger, and our killers are no exception.

And we know who’s down there. Fans of the Scream franchise know that Ghostface is an identity assumed by a different mindless person in each film, so there are plenty of surprising and iconic roles to choose from. . While the character’s face is covered by a mask during combat, the killer underneath is sometimes revealed during climactic moments. As for the movies, this usually takes a dramatic turn when the killers’ identities are finally revealed. For Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns, it’s cinematic high-definition critical hits and finishing moves. And our ‘canon’ Ghostface in these moments is none other than Billy Loomis, one of the Ghostface killers in the original Scream movie.

And he’s not the only blast from the past lurking under that mask, behind that voice, in the shadows. In movies, there’s usually more than one Ghostface, and that’s true here as well. There are a few surprises in store for longtime Mortal Kombat fans with a keen eye to discover, including those who stepped in to support the OG, Woodsboro Ghostface. After all, this isn’t the first time Ghostface has sought the help of a hired serial killer!

Ghostface’s move set in Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns is also a move to die for. Of course, this character is filled with bloody finishers in the form of Fatalities, Animals, and all-new Atrocities that victors can dispense after victory. Revisiting classic films to find scenes that pay homage, deciding what types of attacks to perform and how they lead to different attacks, is a grim joy. Screaming fans may have the most surprising predictions and (forgive me) takedowns of the beloved characters they expect to be mentioned, and although I don’t dare reveal them here, here, but we’ve made sure to include a few interesting details you might not expect.

We hope you enjoy Ghostface joining the roster on November 19 as part of the early access period for owners of Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns Expansion on PlayStation 5, followed by a purchase period widely on November 26.
