Editor’s Note

This is a recurring post, regularly updated with new information.

Managing your credit card portfolio can get complicated if you have multiple credit cards. This includes figuring out how to transfer credit lines between cards. Luckily, the solution is simple if you’re an American Express cardholder.

Here’s what you need to know.

How to transfer money via American Express cards

One option to transfer credit between cards with American Express is to go to your “account services” tab at americanexpress.com and request a credit limit increase. However, doing so may trigger an additional request on credit report. You may also not want American Express to give you any more credit.

Instead, there are a series of easy steps you can take to reallocate your credit limit between American Express.

  • Visit the American Express website.
  • Log in to your Amex account via this link.
  • Select the card you want to use the credit limit on.
  • Select the card you want to transfer your credit limit to.
  • Enter the amount of credit you want to transfer. (Amex will automatically pre-populate the amount you are allowed to transfer.)

After submitting the form, you may get a message asking you to wait 15 minutes for the new limits to appear — or they may appear immediately.

Here are some other things you should know when trying to transfer your credit line:

  • You can transfer from one personal card to another, from one card to another business credit card to another card and from a personal card to a business credit card. However, you cannot transfer from a business credit card to a personal card.
  • There may be restrictions on the age of the card to transfer from or to and how often you can transfer credit. If you receive an error message after submitting the form, you may have exceeded these restrictions. Unfortunately, we were unable to reach an Amex representative to clarify these restrictions.
  • Do not have hard or soft credit pull to transfer credit lines.
  • The cards you want to convert must be accessible in the same online profile.

The last line

Transferring credit lines between cards is a convenient online feature that Amex offers, but I’m sure it’s not used as much as it should be. If you need to transfer credit lines, put your phone away and follow our guide to doing it online in minutes.
