In a surprise move, the Supreme Court decides not to eliminate abortion rights—For now
Supreme Court on Thursday discarded object an effort to limit access to mifepristone—a safe, widely prescribed abortion drug that countless people now rely on more than ever. The ruling – in which the Court declared the plaintiffs did not have legal standing to bring an objection, because they were just a group of anti-abortion doctors who did not like the idea of other doctors prescribing the drug – was a shocking ruling because of that conservatives overturned Roe v. Wade two years ago still on the bench. And while this outcome is clearly preferable to the alternative, reproductive rights advocates still warn people not to take their eye off the ball.
For one thing, abortion pills are still illegal in 14 states. For others, like New York Times note, the attorneys general in Idaho, Missouri and Kansas have embarked on their own medical abortion challenges, which could also end up before the Supreme Court; and the Court on Thursday did not rule on the merits of the plaintiffs’ arguments — just that they did not have “standing” to litigate their case, meaning a more knowledgeable group in terms of Legal may very well be more successful. “Unfortunately, the attacks on the abortion pill will not stop here—the anti-abortion movement recognizes how important the abortion pill is in the post-fish eggs world, and they are determined to cut off access,” President of the Center for Reproductive Rights Nancy Northup said in a statement. “Ultimately, this ruling is not a ‘victory’ for abortion—it merely maintains the status quo, which is a serious public health crisis.”
Meanwhile, since there is no need to remind anyone, there is a very real possibility that Donald Trump, who often brags about killing Roe v. Wade, could win in November and pursue mifepristone after that. Which a group of his supporters are hoping he will do and have given him clear instructions on how to do it. EQUAL Joe Bidencampaign manager of, Julie Chavez Rodríguez, Talk to time, Project 2025—a series of policy proposals drafted by the Heritage Foundation—explicitly calls for the FDA to rescind its decades-long approval of abortion pills. Trump’s allies, time note, “is also pushing to restore the Comstock Act, a 19th-century anti-vice law, to ban the mailing of drugs even in states that allow abortion.”
