Sony has been gathering all kinds of tracks from its projects over the past four years since stray sheep came out in 2020. This means that songs that were also incredible hits from that album, like “Umi no Yuurei,” are not here. But trust me when I say it’s totally fine. Given Yonezu’s career thus far, I have no doubt that in 10 or 20 years we will see a huge CD set of 2-3 full-length “great hits” releases.
But what’s shocking is the listening lost corners, look at the tracklist and realize Kenshi Yonezu’s influence on our modern media landscape. I hear it and immediately remember the shows, movies, and games associated with it. “Tsuki wo Miteita – Watching the moon?” That’s the word Final Fantasy XVI. “Kick back?” Chainsaw man. “Spinning ball?” I heard that the day before watching The boy and the heron first time. “Ladies”, “Mainichi – Every Day” and “POP SONG?” All of that is in the ad and at at least one of them was popular enough to gain attention outside of Japan due to it being a PlayStation commercial.
