LEGO Horizon Adventures Hands-on Report – PlayStation.Blog
Aloy is ready to take on each LEGO brick of a post-apocalyptic world this holiday season in LEGO Horizon Adventures. Guerrilla and Studio Gobo have built a fun spin on the familiar Horizon games, delivering eye-popping stop-motion animation, amusing storytelling, and world-building that will (literally) make the series This familiarity is like a new adventure.
The hands-on demo laid the foundation for fun with an initial solo tutorial stage controlling Aloy, followed by a co-op story mission in which Aloy and her Nora tribe companion Varl Set out to save a beloved leader from cultists using their weapons, environment, and yes, even hot dogs. Here are some moments that caught my attention:
A familiar world comes to life with LEGO bricks
Right off the bat, this LEGO version of the world looks incredibly realistic, with each brick placed in a way that builds on the world that Horizon fans know and love. Aloy moves around the world in stop-motion style on the spot. The original voice cast also returns to retell Aloy’s story with a bold tone, adding humor and playfulness to keep familiar plot points fresh and bring laughter to the crowd. audience island.
A LEGO girl and her bow
Aloy can use her bow for combat and to help navigate the brick-filled wilderness. Holding down the Square button allows Aloy to aim the bow at specific targets. This is made easier by pressing R1 to activate her Focus, highlighting key targets in blue. Aloy unleashes powerful attacks by taking advantage of her surroundings; Shooting an arrow through a bonfire will create a flaming projectile, dealing extra damage to enemies, or burning grass or vines to open up new routes.
Flip each LEGO brick
Playful curiosity is often rewarded, so take time to explore. While Studs – LEGO’s form of currency – are scattered along the main roads, you can find more by shooting crates or other objects. Chests are found while exploring main roads, and Aloy can discover special piles of bricks. Aloy can craft these bricks into various designs (a sailboat! a doghouse!) to earn even more Studs.
Build a home in Mother’s heart
You must visit the game’s main hub village, Mother’s Heart. A trip to the All Mother Tree allows Aloy and any companions to upgrade their specific weapons or use Studs to purchase upgrades that benefit everyone. This area is also where you can customize your outfit or hut, specifically the roof, yard, plot, and color of the hut. Naturally, I dropped some rivets on a roof with a roller coaster on top. I was even able to pick up and throw village NPCs into purchased wardrobes, equipping them with outfits from the Horizon world or other LEGO game products.
Click on the couch co-op companion
While in Mother’s Heart, I let my sofa companion control Aloy as I stepped into the LEGO brick shoes of Varl, her spear-wielding companion. Varl’s spear ability works essentially the same as Aloy’s, but we each purchase different ability upgrades at the All Mother Tree. While exploring, enemies can purchase or drop additional temporary upgrades specific to different characters. In Varl’s case, it appears as a stronger spear, allowing 12 throws before breaking. If one player loses all their health in co-op, the other player can revive them with the Triangle button. But be aware – once revived, you’ll drop any temporary upgrades you’ve collected up to that point.
Speaking of those upgrades…
Any character can use certain ability upgrades, and they are very useful during encounters. LEGO brick separator unleash a powerful melee attack that can literally tear enemies apart. Knocking out marked machine parts can sometimes even benefit a new weapon. When I released the LEGO Brick Splitter on Long Legs, its severed horns started spinning and I could kick them towards enemies for additional attacks. Jump over enemies using Shoes explode will burn them. My favorite upgrade is the Hot Dog Cart, a quickly assembled cart complete with a hot dog man who bombs hot dogs across the battlefield to great and engaging effect. This is invaluable in crazy or crowded encounters, and honestly, it just makes me dizzy.
LEGO Horizon Adventures invites players (and a co-op friend) to take a hilarious spin on the world of Aloy when it launches on PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch this holiday season.
