Lesson I Want To Escape Princess Anime has an awkward start
I’m not sure how I feel about the Winter 2025 anime I want to escape the princess’s lesson. When I first started seeing rickshaw shared by Crunchyroll and EMT Squared Studios, I’m thinking this could be a fun comedy about a young woman working towards freedom, then hoping to find a solution that benefits her. (Maybe there’s a little romance, too!) But now that I’m two episodes in, the nature of the adaptation and the situation feels awkward and not at all what I expected.
Editor’s note: There will be spoilers for the first two episodes of the series. I want to escape the princess’s lesson cartoon below.
Leticia is the daughter of Duke Dorman, who will become a princess after marriage. She is engaged to Prince Clarke. As the introduction suggests, she’s known about this since she was a child, which means we get a better understanding of what this entails. It’s true that it happened quite quickly so we don’t have the clearest understanding of the severity of the situation. However, EMT Squared takes as much time as possible to show that this is not exactly ideal! I understand that, but it’s an odd choice for a first episode given how funny the source material is.
For starters, the opening moments involve Lettie at night in the palatial house. She was running for an exit when she found herself trapped and collapsed on the floor crying. Prince Clarke enters and we see him witness how upset she is. From there, the show backtracks a bit to show how she ended up at that time. A letter arrived at her family’s home. Her parents announced that she would marry the prince. The mother considered this “wonderful” news, while her father held her as she cried. She and her brother Nadir go to the palace and as they do, her mother even hints at how drastic the separation will be by noting that she and Lettie’s father will see her when they continue. royal ants. The adults were gossiping about her as she was escorted to her room in her new house, and her brother dropped her in her room and disappeared. She is suddenly left with a strict teacher, who immediately begins studying with Laila Mayer. That’s terrible for a seven year old!
I completely understand the importance of showing the background of Lettie’s shapes in I want to escape the princess’s lesson cartoon. But the nature of the first episode and the extent of the events shown took away from the subtle nuances that could have helped establish some form of support for her. Her parents could have used less sparkle and a longer look. The same thing happened with her brother, although Nadir was rather curt and old by nature. It created the trauma, isolation and mental breakdown experiences she endured. However, I feel like it also left me with the side effect of seeing everyone around her as a bad person.
It also means that at the halfway point of the first episode, when Prince Clarke attends the ball with Lady Brianna Lariquel and breaks off the engagement, it feels really strange that the show suddenly takes a comedic turn. Its funny.
It’s true that the show will be much better when it gets to that point! Once Lettie can be herself again, it will be much more fun to watch! Nadir is a much better character at this point, as well as much more fun, and EMT Squared is able to better showcase the cool sibling dynamic. And the second set is much stronger because it doesn’t have the weird tonal shifts and strange disparities. Instead, it’s a full-on comedy, starting with everyone lamenting the end of Clarke’s engagement and Lettie and Brianna now having to face the same painful lessons about Princess. We also improved the character development of Lily, the personal attendant introduced in the first episode, who is presented as a true friend and supports Lettie from the end of that episode to this one. Even Clarke seems more human and less villainous.
Second volume of I want to escape the princess’s lesson The anime is much stronger than the first season, which is a relief, but I’m still worried about how the rest of the season will play out. The original series is a powerful series! Much of the first episode felt a bit awkward, and it seemed a bit odd and rushed in tone, until it finally got to the point where Lettie was free and herself again. I hope that the rest of the show will be as consistent as the second episode, because the beginning of the first episode left the vibes hanging until the “reveal.”
