Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games Series Ends Because of NFTs and Esports
While the 2024 Paris Olympics are still happening, Sonic the Hedgehog, Mario and their friends won’t be participating. Mario & Sonic at the Olympics The series is no longer continuing, as the International Olympic Committee (or IOC) has decided to pursue other partnerships. (Thanks, Eurogamer player!)
This is the first time in nearly twenty years that a Mario & Sonic at the Olympics The game will not be released to coincide with the Olympic Games. Instead, the IOC has chosen to partner with esports and NFTs.
License for Mario and Sonic game expired in 2020with the IOC deciding not to extend it. According to Eurogamer’s interview with Lee Cocker, who worked on most of the Mario and Sonic entries, the decision was made to bring the interactive links under more control of the IOC.
This year’s official tie-in game is a smartphone and PC exclusive called Go! Paris 2024 OlympicsDeveloped by nWay. This free-to-play game features 12 Olympic sports and promotional NFTs for the Paris Olympics.
Final Mario & Sonic at the Olympics The game was released in 2019 to coincide with the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The first installment in the series appeared in 2007.
