Marvel Rivals’ Splatoon-inspired mode is welcome in a Sea of Recycled Live Service Events
Jeff the Landshark is a divisive character Marvel’s rival player. Some (like me) believe he is one of the most incredible things ever conceived, while others consider him an abomination to humanity. Whatever your opinion of this little guy, there’s no denying that his limited-time Winter Celebration mode is an absolute blast.
In Jeff’s Winter Splash, two teams of four Jeffs will battle from start to finish to cover as much snow as possible in Yggsgard’s Biblast Garden. With an icy beam replacing his usual primary fire, it’s a battle to cover the most ground by the end of the three-minute period. Jeff can still use his other abilities, allowing you to take down enemies, but his healing bubble will become a grenade that covers the area. From underground diving to vibrant colors, it’s Splatoon with sharks and I love it.
If the idea alone isn’t enough, playing enough of this mode will get you Jeff’s adorable snow outfit for free. By completing specific challenges, you will receive “Frost”, which can be used to purchase decorations for your in-game Christmas postcards. Gold Frost adds the main decorations, while Silver Frost is used to customize each section to create your ideal card. The more decorations you buy, the more Holiday-themed gifts you’ll earn. From MVP animations to emotes and of course the Cuddly Fuzzlefin outfit for Jeff.
Is Jeff’s Winter Splashfest a completely revolutionary regime? Marvel’s rival? Not really, but it serves as a fun break from the chaos of regular matches. Unless you’re looking to take a break because you’ve been thrown off the map by Jeff more times than you can count. That happens one much in this mode. However, the time it takes them to grab you and take off, you can actually put them at a disadvantage. Such a simple mode is enough for that periodic cleaning Splatoon itchy without dusting the Switch. I mean that literally, as my annual Switch recap shows I only touched that console for four hours this year.
Marvel’s rival‘ the first event not only sparked hope for the future of the game but also raised the standard of competition. Established direct service titles have become a bit of a thing also comfortable with recycling specific events with mediocre rewards in recent years. While we don’t know Sure that it is the influence of competitor, Ohverwatch 2 has recently stepped up its game. Currently, players can earn three brand new skins for free. Considering that the original trailer featured these as storefront skins, it’s possible that our little Landshark friend has something to do with it.
It goes without saying Marvel’s rival has the benefit of being completely new. Because of that novelty, every event will be new and interesting in the near future. But there are only so many times I can play Mei’s Snowball Attack in watch out, take precautionsBake the same cookies in Destiny 2or rescue Metzen in World of Warcraft. It’s fun to have something new to enjoy this year and that makes me excited to see Marvel’s rival has the potential to light the competitive fire and benefit both itself and the games we love. Only time will tell if NetEase can keep this momentum, but let’s hope they do.
Marvel’s rival and its Winter Celebration event is play for free on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
