Meta announces ‘Movie Gen’ AI engine that can create realistic videos with sound from simple prompts

Meta announced the launch of a new AI model called Movie Gen, designed to generate video and audio clips based on user input. The tool aims to create both visual and audio effects, capable of influencing the media landscape. According to Meta, this model can produce video clips up to 16 seconds long and audio clips up to 45 seconds long. The generated content will seamlessly synchronize video and audio, bringing new possibilities to content creators.

The possibilities of the film genre

In a recent blog parcelMeta demonstrated the tool by showcasing clips that included footage of swimming animals and individuals engaging in creative activities. AI also transforms existing content, such as inserting props like pom-poms into runners’ hands or turning a dry parking lot into a watery scene with skateboarders. Meta emphasizes that Movie Gen’s capabilities don’t just stop at creating new clips – it can also edit existing videos, giving creators more customization options.

The company further emphasized that AI can create background music and sound effects, enhancing the overall quality of the content. Meta cites blind tests that show Movie Gen’s performance is competitive with offerings from other AI leaders, including OpenAI and ElevenLabs. However, Meta has no plans to make this tool available to developers, citing the need for careful risk assessment. Instead, the company plans to work directly with the entertainment industry and content creators to integrate this model into future products.

The impact of AI on the entertainment industry

The rise of AI-generated video has raised questions across industries, especially in entertainment. Filmmakers are eager to explore how to use AI in production, although concerns remain about the legal and ethical implications, especially the use of copyrighted materials. Similar issues have arisen in Hollywood, where OpenAI model Sora faced accusations of illegally impersonating the voice of actress Scarlett Johansson. While OpenAI continues to negotiate with Hollywood studios, no formal agreement has been reached. Other studios, such as Lions Gate Entertainment, have partnered with AI companies, contributing to the development of AI in film production.

Beyond entertainment, AI-generated content has become a global concern, especially with the rise of deepfakes in the political landscape. The rapid development of video-generating AI has accelerated over the past two years, with major companies like Google and OpenAI working on similar technologies. Although OpenAI’s video generator has not yet been publicly released, Meta’s Movie Gen demonstrates that AI-driven media continues to evolve, raising both opportunities and challenges.
