Nelson Mandela and the fight to eradicate poverty |

Nelson Mandela, the first president of South Africa after apartheid, is considered the most respected African leader in modern history.

In addition to honoring Mandela’s legacy as a champion of human rights, equality and social justice, the Day also promotes the fight against poverty.

In this (short!) special, Conor talks to Richard Stengel, a former Time magazine executive who served in the Obama White House as Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs, and was a close collaborator with Mandela on his acclaimed autobiography, Long Walk to Freedom.

They talk about the extent to which poverty alleviation played a key role in Mandela’s political activism and career.
