Nintendo doesn’t often mention the GameCube, but this week it made a special exception by reminding its social media followers of an important anniversary.

Yes, today marks the 20th anniversary Paper Mario: The Millennium Door on the GameCube in Japan. This classic game is often considered the best version in the Mario RPG series and as we all know, it returned a few months ago on the Nintendo Switch.

Although Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is currently celebrating its 20th anniversary in Japan, the game wasn’t actually released in places like North America, Europe, and Australia until October 2004 and November 2004, respectively.

If you’re excited to join in the celebrations today, be sure to check out the Switch version. Here’s a sampling of what we had to say about the new version in our Nintendo Life review:

“For 20 years, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door has been considered the best Mario RPG of all time, and the remake on Switch proves it’s worthy of that title.”
