“Open to Ideas” Jim Carrey plays Robotnik in future Sonic movies
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 marks the return of Jim Carrey after the actor previously announced that he might retire from the industry. However, not only did he return to play Ivo Robotnik, but he also took on another role in the form of Gerald Robotnik, Ivo’s grandfather and creator of Shadow the Hedgehog.
In a previous interview with DiversityCarrey said that his retirement announcement was “exaggerated” and that he decided to return to play Robotnik because “Frankly, I bought a lot of things and I needed the money”. Now, in a new interview with Cinema todayhe expressed a willingness to return to future Sonic films, as long as he thought the potential new ideas sounded “interesting”.
“I’m definitely open. I’m open to ideas, and generally they come to me with the next idea, and if I say ‘that sounds interesting,’ you know, then I’ll do it.” I don’t feel bound to anything in life unless it’s something I care about.
“I definitely love this crew, I love the team that makes these movies and I love the fans. I think there’s a lot of really great energy around them and great feedback. And fans jumped on it and said “What if you do this?” you know, and they’re extremely helpful; I think we’re all in this together.”
When referring to his previous retirement announcement, Carrey joked that his intention now was to “take a power break” between projects. We think he might need a pretty big role after playing two roles in Sonic 3!
So we guess whether Carrey returns in a future movie or not is now up to the writers. We’ve seen the third movie, we know how the story goes, but we ask you to keep spoilers to a minimum in the comments section.
