OpenAI Appoints Veteran AI Professor Zico Kolter to Board of Trustees


OpenAI has appointed Zico Kolter, a professor and director of machine science at Carnegie Mellon University, to the company’s board of directors, the Microsoft-backed AI startup said on Thursday.

The board of directors of ChatGPT maker has undergone a number of changes amid growing concerns about the safety of artificial intelligence as more businesses rapidly adopt the booming technology.

Kolter, whose work focuses primarily on AI safety, will also join. OpenAI The board’s safety and security committee, along with CEO Sam Altman and directors Bret Taylor, Adam D’Angelo, Paul Nakasone and Nicole Seligman, the company said.

The safety committee was established in May, making recommendations on safety and security decisions for all OpenAI projects.

Kolter, formerly chief data scientist at C3.ai, is currently a principal at Bosch and chief technical advisor at Gray Swan — a startup specializing in AI Safety and security.

According to an OpenAI blog post, in 2023, Kolter contributed to the development of methods for automatically assessing the safety of large language models, demonstrating the potential to overcome existing model protections.

Microsoft gave up its board observer position at OpenAI in July, in a move aimed at allaying concerns from US and UK antitrust regulators about the level of control Microsoft has over the startup amid the growing adoption of genAI.
