Pirate Metroidvania Coming to Combine Hades-Style Visuals and Souls-Like Combat on Switch Next Year
Developer Mad Mimic and publisher Light Up Games have announced a pirate metroidvania The mark of the abyss will land on Switch in January 2025.
You may remember that this event was originally planned for one Launch October 2024 — a date that clearly hasn’t been met — and while it’s never ideal to see a beautiful game delayed, a new release isn’t far away.
For those who missed the original announcement, Mark of the Deep will see you shipwrecked on a cursed island (the worst kind of island), forced to fight your way through all sorts of enemies evil in an attempt to reunite his crew. Exploration has a metroidvania structure, and the developer emphasizes a certain Soulslike approach to combat – so expect to see some fun dodging.
Looking at the new gameplay trailer (above), we can’t help but think a little Hades in the isometric camera, action animations, and overall visuals of the game. Obviously, there are no roguelike elements mentioned here, but we’d be surprised if Supergiant’s journey through the underworld doesn’t offer at least a little inspiration in terms of design.
You can find a summary of the game’s story and key features as well as some screenshots below:
A pirate ship is wrecked on a mysterious and cursed island, until then known only through myths. In this diverse hostile environment, the Rookie needs to face many different dangers to find his missing crew.
However, by exploring strange biomes and fighting abyssal monsters, he will learn that the Island was cursed centuries ago, when the cult leader of the Old Folk – the native inhabitants of the island – imprisoned Leviathan in search of immortality.
Feature:
– Get new abilities that change the way you fight enemies, traverse the environment, and unlock new paths!
– Experience challenging yet fair combat against many different enemies!
– Find your missing crew and take them to the Crew HUB!
– Upgrade your weapons and abilities!
We still don’t have specifics on when exactly Mark of the Deep will drop on Switch in January 2025, but we’ll stay tuned in the coming weeks for more information.
We were fortunate to embark on this project at Tokyo Game Exhibition this year and we like what we see. Here’s hoping that the full game can keep the good times coming.
