Believe it or not, there was a time when survival horror was truly excellent.

Around 2012, Capcom was leading its flagship Resident devil franchise in a much more action-oriented direction, Konami appears to have moved on from Silent Hill rotten (until spectacularly PT demo will bring a welcome but temporary rest) and EA Dead Space 3 is gradually becoming a shadow of its excellent predecessors.

Resident Evil 6 special is considered the final nail in the coffin for Capcom’s survival horror giant. Building on the foundation laid by Evil resides 4 And 5The sixth main entry boasts four unique, interconnected campaigns that deliver horror action on a truly global scale. Finally, it allows the player not only to move and shoot at the same time, but also to rush in any direction, confuse the enemy, and with the help of many quick events, control the helicopter to narrowly miss a speeding train.

The problem is, for veteran fans of the series, this may seem a far cry from the slower survival horror gameplay that is credited with putting the franchise on the map in the first place. Yes, it has a stellar cast of characters and, in many ways, it’s comfortably the most fan-service entry in the entire franchise, but the shift to over-the-top action instead of survival horror is enough causing many fans to pick it aside in disgust.

However, as the game turns 12 years old on October 2, 2024 (and today for Japan, at the time of writing), it seems many people have softened toward Resident Evil 6 over the years. Indeed, this writer completely despised this game when it first came out, but revisiting it on PS4 and Switch revealed that it’s a flawed but hugely enjoyable action game. It’s ambitious, it’s emotional, it’s absolutely ridiculous on so many levels, and you know what? We love it.

Take a look at some of the responses in Capcom’s anniversary post above and you’ll see that many fans are still divided about Resident Evil 6. Some say it’s “one of the best entries in the franchise”while others say it is “literally the worst game [Capcom] ever published” (a bit of an exaggeration, if you ask us).
