As we get closer and closer to the official reveal of the Switch’s successor, there’s sure to be a sharp increase in rumors and bold claims. Latest comes from Reddit and teeters precariously on the line between the plausible and the utterly bizarre. It’s also a pretty old idea; something we can definitely see coming to fruition in the future, but right now..? We are not completely convinced.

It all has to do with the scroll wheel. Specifically the scroll wheel shoulder button. Idea comes from Redditor’adjacent-sub‘, the person claimed to have been holding a dummy model of the upcoming ‘Switch 2’. They claim that this model does not have any type of internal parts nor any signs of ports or vents. Um… Convenient.

What they DO However, it can be said that the shoulder buttons are now rollable; similar to what you might find on a PC mouse, although stiff enough that you can still click the buttons without accidentally scrolling them. What’s interesting is that they compare this concept to the concept of a store conveyor belt, which… okay, okay!

Before commenting further, let’s look at the exact statement:

“Now comes the fun part, the shoulder buttons can spin! I sat there playing with it in my hand and stared at it for about 2 or 3 minutes straight before moving on, spinning what looked like wheels this in my fingers because it’s so awesome.” strange but satisfying. It reminds me of a mouse wheel, where it spins as you run your finger along it but still clicks like a button. Each rotation creates a ticking feeling. in your hand as it moves, like a mouse wheel, but it’s very heavy so it requires some force to move. Additionally, they are sturdy enough to not spin at the mere click of the buttons. They are not like normal wheels. because they’re not round, they’re more square like the current Switch shoulder shape. Instead, it feels like a strip of rubber-type material resting on a groove that allows it to spin.

“To help visualize, the best comparison I can think of that people see every day is like the conveyor belt at stores at checkout. I guess this makes it rectangular rather than a big circle inside. I’m personally very excited.” Let’s see what Nintendo does with this!”

Now, there are a few things that go against this. First, a random Redditor isn’t exactly the most trustworthy source. Second, it seems a bit odd that Nintendo produced a dummy of an upcoming console with no internals, no ports, no vents but conveniently retained the function buttons . Third, the scroll wheel function has become a notable point this year: Masahiro Sakurai made a video about this ideaand we even Introduce an article some time later considering the possibility of a scroll wheel in ‘Switch 2’.

So are we partly the cause of this..? No no no, of course not, how silly. Interestingly, after discussions held earlier this year about the concept of a scroll wheel in ‘Switch 2’, it has now suddenly become a thing that is definitely true.

What we’re saying is, be careful out there, everyone. Rumors are flying around at the moment and we won’t know right from wrong until Nintendo finally pulls back the curtain on its new hardware. Come on Nintendo, we’re all waiting…
