Random: PlayStation director Astro Bot pays homage to Mario and Nintendo in GOTY speech
There have been a lot of comparisons this year showing the success of the PlayStation Astro Bot like one super mario or Nintendo games rather than Sony games. With this in mind, it seems like game director Nicolas Doucet may have finally put an end to all this debate.
In a surprising moment during the ‘Game of the Year’ section at this year’s Game Awards, he took a moment to pay tribute to some of his key inspirations…
Although his studio ‘Team Asobi’ is under Sony’s control, he admitted Super Mario Bros. and Nintendo for fueling his passion and inspiring the entire team. Here’s what he had to say, while carefully avoiding saying the company’s name.
“Last and not least…and I wasn’t going to say it, but I’m going to say it anyway, you know platformers, you know PlayStation for 30 years, and we made a platformer great – it’s very nostalgic.” and at the same time new but don’t forget that even before PlayStation there were people making platform games. I remember I was a kid for Christmas 1989, and I got a gray box, there was a game packaged inside, it was called Super Mario Bros. . and it’s really, really cool – so we’re in Japan, we’re in Tokyo, they’re in Kyoto, but I want to pay tribute to the company that really loves the platforms and shows us innovation and quality consistently, and inspires us to actually make the games we make…And I’ve been trying not to mention them, have you noticed? But you all know who they are”
Comparisons aside, Astro Bot is a beautiful 3D platformer that celebrates the 30th anniversary of the PlayStation. Our friends at Push Square gave the game an “excellent” score of 10 out of 10 stars when it arrived in September, consider it one of the best platformers of all time.
