The Ukrainian military and local authorities said on Sunday that Russia launched several missiles and drones overnight into northern and eastern Ukraine, injuring at least 29 people.

The Ukrainian air force said on the Telegram messaging app that the attack targeted the Ukrainian frontline regions of Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv and Donetsk.

Russia has repeatedly attacked Ukraine’s border areas, and Kiev said its surprise attack on Russia’s Kursk region earlier this month was aimed at denying Moscow the ability to carry out such attacks.

“Most of the missiles failed to reach their targets,” the air force said, adding that Russia had launched an Iskander-M ballistic missile, an Iskander-K cruise missile and six unguided missiles. It did not specify how many missiles were destroyed.

A rocket attack in the northern Sumy region killed one person and injured at least 16 others, including three children, local authorities said on Telegram.

Oleh Sinehubov, governor of the eastern Kharkiv region, posted on Telegram that at least 13 people were injured in Russian attacks, including a 4-year-old child.

Ihor Terekhov, mayor of Kharkiv, said a gas pipeline in the city was damaged, at least two houses were destroyed and 10 were damaged.

The air force said Russia launched nine attack drones, eight of which were destroyed by Ukrainian air defenses over Ukraine’s Mykolaiv region.

Reuters could not independently verify the reports. There was no immediate comment from Russia.

Both sides deny targeting civilians in the war, which Russia launched with a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
