Salt Hotels adds two New England hotels to its growing luxury boutique lineup
Just when it seemed like the big hotel groups were gobbling up every more interesting small brand they could find, independent-minded travelers can rest easy: headquartered in Cape Cod Salt hotel is expanding on its own.
The hotel collective, headquartered in Provincetown, Massachusetts, has a presence in North America with properties in Miami (Hotel Greystone) and Cape Cod (Salt House Inn in Provincetown) and projects in the works in Minneapolis and Mexico. But the company’s latest openings in Connecticut and Nantucket are notable additions to the New England hotel scene.
The Abner in Litchfield, Connecticut, is the conversion of the Litchfield County Courthouse into a 20-room luxury hotel. The renovation included converting the old courtroom into the Courtroom, a restaurant with judge’s benches and jury boxes repurposed as banquet seating and reception tables. We dare you not to be inspired to channel your inner Mariska Hargitay and deliver a “Law & Order”-inspired courtroom monologue after dining here.
“We went to Litchfield and it was like a set from a Hallmark movie,” said David Bowd, co-founder of Salt Hotels. It’s so beautiful.” “Restoring these historic buildings is so exciting.”
Abner, designed by Salt Hotels co-founder Kevin O’Shea, also features Verdict, a seasonal rooftop bar. The towering watering hole is intended to recall the formal gardens of the turn of the last century and offers views of the surrounding countryside. Guests can check in to a variety of room types, from the cozy Snug (formerly a judge’s suite and now ideal for solo travelers) to the Suite (formerly a larger judge’s suite that now has a Spacious shower and seating area along with standard amenities such as Further and Palermo full shower facilities and a minibar stocked with locally sourced items). Breakfast is included with every stay – a Salt Hotels brand standard.
But the brand doesn’t stop there. The group is also open The BrantThere are 26 rooms and suites in a three-building complex on Nantucket and may feel like the poster child for some of the flashier resorts and cozy inns on the island earlier this year. Guests can enjoy a complimentary breakfast before lounging around the pool with a cocktail or mocktail and a copy of Elin Hilderbrand’s latest novel. Accommodations range from studios to multi-bedroom suites with kitchenettes.
