Samsung Galaxy Z Flip Phones Are Now Being Used by Police as Body Cameras: Here’s How It Happened

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 launched a few weeks ago, and after becoming popular among athletes at the 2024 Paris Olympics, the foldable phone is now being used by law enforcement officials in the United States. In a surprising move, police in the United States are now using the Galaxy Flip for surveillance and other purposes.

According to a post shared by Samsung, the Kimberling City Police Department and Indian Point Police Department used a batch of foldable Galaxy Z Flip smartphones for a pilot project to test the ability of electronic devices to improve the efficiency of police officers’ daily operations two years ago.

This is the first time police have used a foldable device as a body camera. After the pilot project ended, two new police departments began using the Flip device as a body camera. Likewise, the results of the pilot tests are reportedly being adopted by 25 metropolitan police departments in five states.

The Flip devices used in the police trials were specially designed in partnership with a company called Visual Labs, which modified the mobile devices to function as body cameras and dash cams. According to Samsung, changes such as improving the phone’s volume button to launch the camera were made so that police could easily start recording quickly while on the scene.

Samsung’s recent blog post took many users, especially those in the United States, by surprise as no one expected the post to introduce this compelling use case. The Verge, a technology publication, shared an investigative report published by the New York Times and ProPublica that highlighted the role of local laws in hindering the release of body-worn camera footage.

Enhancing the role of technology devices in law enforcement activities

Samsung isn’t the only company whose products have been trusted by law enforcement. Ring, an Amazon-owned company that makes smart doorbells, has entered into agreements with police officials that include what type and how footage is shared.

There is no doubt that the role of technology in areas such as law enforcement and security has increased over the years. Today, investigative agencies and defense forces are using high-tech equipment such as facial recognition systems and drones to ensure security.
