Sega is “evaluating” its own Netflix-style subscription service
Sega’s Western boss revealed that the company is internally discussing the idea of creating its own subscription-based game service.
Talking to BBC regarding subscription services such as Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus, Shuji Utsumi said that such services are “very interesting” and that Sega is currently “evaluating a number of opportunities”.
He added:
We’re thinking something – and discussing something – we can’t reveal right now.
This means Sega will join Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo in offering monthly subscriptions for access to games.
Given its history, it makes sense for Sega to look into a subscription model. This is one of the industry veterans and has been making games since the 70s. With such a deep catalog to claim, this type of service will immediately appeal to players of all ages. .
Sega recently delisted more than 60 titles from its digital storefrontsThis shows that the move to the world of subscription-based gaming is happening at a fairly rapid pace. It also recently removed the Mega Drive/Genesis Classics collection from the eShop, Xbox, and PSN stores.
Select Mega Drive/Genesis games are currently available through Nintendo Switch online.
