Shadows of Doubt launches on PS5 on September 26 – new private detective gameplay revealed

Shadows of Doubt is an immersive detective simulation game that puts players in the role of a private detective, scouring the city for clues and evidence on suspects responsible for various crimes and misdeeds.

As a private detective, you will take on missions and investigations ranging from thefts and dastardly affairs, to kidnappings and murders, uncovering evidence through a variety of means to track down your suspects. Our dream is for players to feel fully immersed as a private detective wandering the streets of a dynamic, living city. You can buy and decorate your own apartment, while every street, building and room is fully explorable, giving you the freedom to fully explore – and investigate – the dark sci-fi world we have created.

Everyone in the city has their own life, their own living space, their own jobs, their own friends, their own daily routines. They’ll be having coffee or dancing at the bar. And with a serial killer on the loose, any one of them could be the next victim.

Likewise, that means anyone could be the culprit and you have to track them down. While every case is different, you’ll generally want to try some tried and tested methods to get some initial leads. Get out your fingerprint scanner and scan the scene for fingerprints, or if there’s a surveillance camera, checking it can help you spot any suspicious characters. There are plenty of ways to gather evidence, from browsing call logs for recent contacts or collecting trashed sales receipts. Alternatively, there’s always the option of taking the more dubious route by bribing people for information, hacking private terminals, or breaking into private apartments. There may be consequences for your actions, but we’ve built Shadows of Doubt with multiple ways to solve each case, meaning you can always be the detective you want to be.

As well as improving your detective skills and earning some money by solving each case, the main form of player progression in Shadows of Doubt comes through Sync Disks, genetic upgrades that give you permanent upgrades and increase your Social Credit level. Each time you find a Sync Disk in the city or receive one as a reward, you’ll be given a choice of upgrades, making some interesting decisions and introducing some RPG-like elements into the game. Upgrades range from traditional buffs like extra health or inventory space, to more interesting modifiers that subtly change how you play the game. Social Credit levels act as a form of experience level that you gain as you complete cases. There are a variety of benefits that come from leveling up, from being able to buy real estate in the city to people being more likely to let you into their homes. There are a lot of other benefits that I can’t wait for you to discover, but the general idea is that you can choose to play Shadows of Doubt with different builds on different generated cities.

Exclusive to the PS5 version, we were able to take advantage of the DualSense Wireless Controller to further immerse players in the world of Shadows of Doubt. Feel the nuances of jailbreaking through haptic feedback or – my favorite – feel the patter of rain as the weather changes. But of course, Shadows of Doubt wouldn’t be a true detective simulation without an umbrella in hand.

Shadows of Doubt has been a true passion project for me and the team over the past 7 years, and we’re thrilled to see the response the game has received. It’s a game that can be as deep or as complex as you want it to be, and we’ve worked hard to build complex systems that drive the game’s criminal underworld and citizens to keep it interesting and fresh no matter your play style. We can’t wait to see how you solve each case when Shadows of Doubt launches on September 26 on PS5.
