As is often the case with these promotions, the incentives vary widely between members. United may not target some members for Mile Play, while others will see different rewards and requirements to earn them. We checked around the TPG group and found the incentives varied.

Keep in mind that to count toward these promotions, trips typically have to be booked and flown after you sign up and before the promotion ends. So if you already have a trip planned during the Mile Play period, it won’t be eligible (though you might consider canceling and rebooking it). And unless otherwise noted in the offer terms, only paid flights marketed and operated by United and United Express count toward Mile Play benefits.

While co-branded credit cards can help you earn United miles, you can earn more rewards when you book with one of the best card to buy plane tickets. For example, The Platinum Card® from American Express Earn 5 points per dollar spent on airfare booked directly with the airline or through American Express Travel (up to $500,000 on these purchases per calendar year, then 1 point per dollar).

Last line

Even if you don’t have any upcoming travel plans with United, it’s worth signing up and considering whether it’s time to plan a trip. If you’ve booked any fully refundable flights—with United or another airline—you should consider whether your Mile Play offer is attractive enough to cancel and rebook with United.
