Astro Bot
While Sony’s dismantling of its Japanese studios was heartbreaking, their last team standing got to work and showed just how good games could be. But hey, we’re not kidding; Maybe we’re just playing the game rather than completely rebuilding what’s already there. However, it’s a game! Best platform without Mario in the title (and a lot better than that with It), Astro Bot takes those warm nostalgic feelings and surrounds them with skillfully crafted levels and super-slick mechanics. The previous adventures of this little robot were also amazing! But this is the first game that doesn’t need an asterisk: a great, complete game for everyone.
Metaphor: ReFantazio
The war and its characters Metaphor focuses on many of the game’s crude narrative elements, building a highly fantasy setting personality that meets lofty expectations well. (And of course the soundtrack is excellent.) It’s familiar enough to keep longtime Atlus enthusiasts happy, while presenting a scene fresh enough to add variety to the studio’s catalog. (Check Stephanie’s review to learn more Metaphor.)
Winner: Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
Although we briefly considered giving away prizes directly to the card game in the Queen’s Blood world, the entire Final Fantasy VII Rebirth worthy of our 2024 PlayStation Game of the Year title. This stellar return to the world of Square Enix’s most popular game is filled with love and care, meeting (and shattering) the expectations of longtime fans. (But yes, you should definitely watch Queen’s Blood.)
