The best recent Sega JRPGs on PS3, PS4 and PS5

Sega is a publisher commonly known for series such as sound focusing on platforms and other genres. But surprisingly, Sega has some excellent Japanese RPGs worth checking out. Here are the best recent Sega JRPGs on PS3, PS4 and PS5. Note that I’m excluding Atlus JRPGs, even though the company is owned by Sega, because they deserve their own list.

The best recent Sega JRPGs on PS3

The PlayStation 3 did not receive much JRPG support from Sega as most of it was for handheld devices at the time such as the DS, PSP, and 3DS. However there are some highlights such as The resonance of fate. This game has one of the best looking combat systems I’ve ever seen with a pretty engaging story.

There are also games like Resonance shines to give the feeling of a flawed yet solid enough, more traditional 3D action RPG. That said, the best PS3 Sega JRPGs come from the originals Valkyria Chronicles. This alternative game set in World War II features a flexible, fun-to-use tactical RPG movement system and an emotional storyline.

The best recent Sega JRPGs on PS4

The return of Fantasy star online happened to Phantasy Star Online 2. This is a free-to-play MMORPG on PS4 that’s worth checking out. There’s a ton of content in this game that you won’t find anywhere else on this list. And there’s always more going on, especially when it comes to major cosmetics and crossover events.

cherry blossom war also made its big return to the West on PS4 with the 2019 version. The combination of mechanical combat and a visual novel dating sim-like plot is quite unique. If you want a little romance amid a dramatic story about women fighting for their lives in war, this is a must-watch.

Then there are my personal favorites on this dashboard: Valkyria Chronicles 4. Not only is it the best game in the series, it’s also one of my favorite Sega JRPGs of all time. The combat is strategic, deep and full of challenging missions and decisions. Plus, the story is one of the most underrated on PS4 with its colorful cast of soldiers and thrilling twists.

The best recent Sega JRPGs on PS5

Even though the PS5 has entered its lifecycle, there aren’t too many non-Atlus Sega JRPGs on it. The core games come from Like a dragon series, including the one that started a major change for the franchise in Yakuza: Like a dragon. This game has changed the brawler gameplay from previous titles Dragon Quest-Inspiring turn-based combat with jobs and more.

It also has one of my favorite stories in gaming, focusing on outcasts as they rise up for revenge. Then there’s also its sequel in Like a dragon: Endless wealth. It continues the story of new protagonist Ichiban while bringing back Kiryu for an exciting trip in Hawaii. The story is a bit more difficult at times, but the turn-based gameplay is improved and the content is exceptionally diverse.
