The iPhone maker’s most expensive product may be dead before it even launches, but its tech could be a gold mine

The iPhone is the key product that has helped Apple become one of the most valuable companies in the world. Although the Cupertino-based giant launches a number of new devices every year, it still has a long list of products that never made it to market. One of the projects that Apple is said to have canceled is its self-driving car. Codenamed Project Titan, Apple’s self-driving car would have been the brand’s most expensive product, but it never made it past the project stage for various reasons. Although Apple is said to have canceled the project, its technology continues to surface online, and one of the patents for the technology has now been discovered by PatentlyApple. The newly discovered patent shows an advanced camera system for vehicles.

According to WIPO published in Europe, Apple’s patent covers an in-vehicle technology in which one or more displays can be integrated into the front windshield. The displays can function as a rearview mirror and a side mirror. Currently, the mirrors are placed separately from the front windshield, requiring the driver to look away from the front windshield when changing lanes or braking. This increases the risk of a collision when the driver looks away from the windshield. With the technology mentioned in the patent, Apple wants to provide a solution.

According to Apple’s patent, the display on the front windshield may be a head-up display, a surface-mounted display, an embedded display, and/or any other suitable display type. The display on the front windshield may be configured to display feeds from multiple cameras above and around the vehicle.

The head-up display would make it easier for users to check for vehicles, people, or other obstacles around their vehicle, and would also allow them to control the vehicle without taking their eyes off the windshield. With Apple’s Project Titan reportedly canceled, it will be interesting to see if this technology makes it into the real world.
