This state is introducing digital driver’s licenses. Here’s what you need to know
By the summer of 2025, many North Carolinians will have one less thing in their wallets. The state has announced plan to give residents options Digital Twin driver’s license instead of carrying a traditional driver’s license.

Currently, 11 states have active digital driver’s license programs: Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, New York, and Utah. In states that use digital ID, your ID is stored inside a secure app. on your phone instead of your physical wallet. It contains the same information as your regular license. You present the app when needed just like a physical license. Currently, registration in participating states is voluntary. Digital IDs have not yet replaced physical copies.
Some digital IDs only allow users to share part of their information, such as their date of birth at a bar. The information is stored only on your local device and is automatically updated if you change your name or address.

If you get into a traffic stop, you hand your phone to the officer just like you would a regular license. In some states, your digital license will appear as a code that needs to be scanned. In some states, it will look just like your regular license.

TSA accepts mobile ID at about 30 security checkpoints nationwide, so check with the airport to see if you need to bring a regular wallet.
Remember that you will need a Actual ID by May 7, 2025, whether you choose digital or paper form. US travelers must be REAL ID compliant to board domestic flights and access some federal facilities.
