Tokyo Game Show 2024 State of Play is still the best game
Overall, I’m not excited about Sony’s regular State of Play series on PlayStation, especially the PS5 and PSVR 2 and game announcements. They often pale in comparison to the other games. Other similar presentations by competitors and of course the company’s own featured event presentations. However, Tokyo Game Show’s recent State of Play (TGS 2024) is the exception, as I believe it is the best yet.
At the core of what makes this TGS 2024 State of Play the best to date are two factors. The first is that Sony offers a little something for almost everyone. It feels like a mini PlayStation launch. State of Play kicked off with an exciting introduction, revealing the upcoming free DLC Astro Bot. This is a slick way to remind players of the one recent Game of the Year candidate and show love to those who beat it.
From there, State of Play has the right mix of brand new announcements and updates for existing games. New information about and detailed gameplay of games such as Dragon Age: Guardian and the PS5 version of Palworld are welcome announcements. Then there are revelations about exciting games like Hell is usgorgeous Midnight walkand surprisingly attractive Ancient Chronicles.
If that’s not enough, we’ve got release dates for titles like Fantasian Neo dimensions, Horizon Zero Dawn RemasteredAnd Dynasty Warriors: Origins. If you’re a PSVR 2 owner, this State of Play makes it even a little more affordable to own a VR headset. There have been important and welcome announcements about games such as Wake up the subway And Hitman: World of Assassination also.
That’s all before including the two showstopper leads. Wild monster hunter looks great again in its latest trailer. Luckily, this State of Play has revealed the release date, which is pretty soon. But most of all, yes Yotei’s ghost. The final announcement was made unexpectedly and shockingly. Ghost of Tsushima Still the best game I’ve ever played, and Yotei’s ghost looks to follow its predecessor.
Either way, there’s something for everyone in this TGS 2024 State of Play. If you like JRPGs then there’s that. If you like VR, there are some solid options. And if you’re looking forward to the biggest third-party and first-party blockbuster hits, it’s here too. Certainly, not every game will appeal to everyone. In fact, there were only two new game announcements for me personally: Yotei’s ghost And Lunar Remastered Collection.
However, the presentation and general lineup both work very well. Even games I don’t care much about stand out with well-done trailers. This state of play first reminded me of the old days of attending Sony press conferences at E3. Plus, it makes this Play State more interesting and balanced than any to date.
That said, the competition wasn’t very impressive. In my opinion, the best State of Play before this one was held in May 2019. It had the right mix of new announcements and re-reveals. Titles are games like Final Fantasy VII remake, MediEvilAnd Monster Hunter World: Iceborne. Once again, all the staples appealed to everyone. Even that particular State of Play is not significant or long lasting. And to make matters worse, most Turn Statuses since then have gotten significantly worse.
Luckily, this most recent TGS 2024 State of Play changes all that. It’s like a mini PlayStation showcase with something for everyone. I just hope Sony can maintain this level of quality and messaging with its next product.
