Undisputed launches on October 11 – how body scanning brings back the authenticity of boxing

From scanning to sculpting

How do you get the longest reigning super middleweight world champion, Joe Calzaghe, to look as realistic and lifelike as possible? It all starts with the scanning process. We work with many scanning studios around the world to create the most accurate reference images for us to work from. The Steel City Interactive art team will then use this technology to sculpt the in-game models, recreating every muscle, vein, hair, and every drop of sweat.

For our boxing legends, we also have an aging process. Players wanted to experience these warriors in their prime, so we tried to accurately recreate what they looked like at the time.

“One of the most challenging parts of bringing characters from the past to life is the aging process. A lot of things usually change with age: eye shape, lip thickness, cheekbones, body fat, even ear size, but my aim is to get them back into fighting shape. , recreating the look of their greatest matches. First, I gathered a lot of references from every possible angle to get an overview of what I wanted to achieve. Then I test the model to understand what to keep and what to change according to the image and shot. Then I work on tone and balance, removing some fat, wrinkles and imperfections on the body and face. Then I sculpt the core muscles and refine the facial contours. Finally, I got to the point where I could recognize this fighter both from afar and up close. When I am satisfied with the results, I also proceed with structural retouching.”

Motion capture

We also try to put as many fighters in our motion capture suits as possible, so we can capture their unique footwork, punches, slides, dodges – and even taunts! When you play as Oleksandr Usyk, we want you to feel like Oleksandr Usyk, so our art and animation teams spend days processing the output from motion capture and then applying it. apply that to our detailed character models.

British and Commonwealth super lightweight champion, Dalton Smith, is one of the fighters we have worked closely with to capture his boxing style. He also helped mimic some of the warriors no longer with us, studying their movements then executing them so we could immortalize them in Undisputed.

“I’m used to boxing in the ring or the gym, but throwing punches in a motion capture suit is a whole different ball game. I prepped my outfit and spent a few days working with the team at Steel City Interactive to capture not only my own in-ring moves but those of some former fighters as well. You won’t realize how intricate and detailed this process is until you’re throwing the same punches and doing the same block over and over again until it’s captured from every angle. It was unbelievable to see the results in the game – my avatar actually looked like me.”

Style (and stats) make the battle

There’s a saying in boxing that ‘styles make the fight’ and we think it’s really important that those styles are also backed up with real statistics. There would be no point in having boxing’s undefeated legend, Rocky Marciano, in the fight if we didn’t give him the punching power and stamina he’s known for.

That’s why we partnered with CompuBox to determine each fighter’s ratings, statistics, and behavior. When you play as a boxer with a great knockout ratio, like Deontay Wilder, his ability to KO in-game is enhanced. And this works the same for their AI version; Each fighter has unique skills and abilities – taken from their real-life fight records – that will meaningfully change the outcome of the fight. Your job is to figure out how to fight that!

Dominate the ring

Undisputed has the most realistic and expansive roster of licensed fighters of any boxing game, and we’re excited for you to experience it.

You can buy the Undisputed WBC Deluxe Edition on October 8 on PS5 and play three days early. Undisputed Standard Edition launches October 11 on PS5.
