Video: Minecraft movie ‘Exclusive Insight’ shows off Live-Action crafting table
During Minecraft 2024 Live, Mojang shared “exclusive insight” into the upcoming 2024 Minecraft movie. April 2025.
The live-action project is being led by director Jared Hess and producer and chief entertainment creative officer at Mojang, Torfi Frans Olafsson. They both understood how the creators had created amazing stories and animated content based on Minecraft and so they decided to do something different with a movie on a much larger scale.
The premise is how real people can exist in the world of Minecraft. According to Hess, “it was very intentional that this live-action movie was called ‘A’ Minecraft Movie instead of ‘The’ Minecraft Movie”, as the team understood that every player had “their own origin story” to this universe.
Production is based in New Zealand, with the famous ‘Weta Workshop’ handling all the props and sets in the film. This includes the involvement of production designer Grant Major, who worked on the original Lord of the Rings trilogy.
As for the film, it was revealed that Jason Momoa’s character will play a champion gamer who is still holding on to his former glory. This exclusive insight also gives Minecraft fans their first look at a live-action version of the crafting table that features a 3×3 grid just like the game. You can see it in action at the 4:55 mark in the video above.
At this year’s Minecraft Live, Mojang also announced a terrifying new biome and mobs (and a few other updates) coming soon:
