You can save 40% on Amazon purchases with just 1 Amex point

Whether you’re stocking up on household essentials or splurging on a new gadget, there are plenty of ways to Save when you order on Amazon. This includes a current offer involving both American Express and Amazon.

Target Amex cardholders can save money on rewards American Express Membership Rewards points to pay for at least part of an eligible purchase on Amazon. Typically, using Membership Rewards points for Amazon purchases isn’t a great way to spend them because the cash back rate per point is lower than the redemption rate for travel points.

However, you can Save up to 40% when shopping on Amazon by redeeming at least 1 Amex point with some current offers.

To participate in this offer, you will need a Membership Rewards points card, such as The Platinum Card® from American Expressthe American Express® Gold Card or American Express® Green Card.

Offer available when using Membership Rewards points to pay on Amazon

Not all Amex cardholders are eligible for Amazon’s offer, so check your account. For example, at the time of publication, most of us at TPG were seeing a 15% savings offer (up to $15), but at least one reporter was seeing a 40% savings offer (up to $40).

Keep in mind that these are targeted deals, so they will change. Over the past few months, we’ve seen even better deals with discounts of up to 50% (with savings of up to $75). Hopefully you’ll be on the lookout for even bigger deals.

Only products sold by Amazon are eligible for the discount. Third-party listings won’t trigger any savings, but you can take advantage of the deal by stocking up on restaurant or retailer gift cards. Gift cards to companies like Whole foods, Uber Eats And Nordstrom may qualify.

How to Save Up to 50% by Redeeming 1 Amex Point

Here are the steps you should take to turn 1 Amex Membership Rewards point into big savings on Amazon purchases:

• Check to see if you have any suitable offers.
• Activate the offer in your Amazon account.
• Load eligible items sold by Amazon — not third parties — into your cart. (Most gift cards are calculated based on history.)
• We don’t recommend paying for your entire order with points, as it may not be the best use of your Membership Rewards points. Instead, use as few points as possible at checkout (as shown below). You’ll need to use American Express Earn membership rewards points as your payment method.

Assuming everything is ok, you should see the offer displayed at checkout.

You’ll need to pay the remainder of the transaction with an Amex card, although you can also use your Amazon gift card balance if you have one linked to your account.

You can occasionally find similar deals with other rewards programs. For example, we’ve seen deals in the past that offer 40% off (up to $20) when using Discover Rewards on select Amazon purchases.

The previous offers additionally allow the target customer to use 1 Citi ThankYou Rewards points for up to 50% off, 1 Capital One miles up to $20 off and 100 off Chase Ultimate Rewards points for discounts up to 50%.
