YouTube Shorts launches text-to-speech feature and new Minecraft effects to compete with TikTok


YouTube has rolled out new features for YouTube Shorts, including a text-to-speech video narration option. The feature lets users add an artificial voice, similar to the robotic voices often heard on TikTok videos. To use the feature, create text, tap the “add voice” icon in the upper left corner of the screen, and choose from four available voices.

Auto generate subtitles

Additionally, YouTube is introducing auto-generated captions that can be added to videos without the need for a third-party app like CapCut. Users can customize these captions with a variety of fonts and colors, similar to the manual text overlay feature currently available on Shorts.

Minecraft Effects and Minigames

YouTube also added a new Minecraft effect, which features a green screen game background, and a mini-game called Minecraft Rush. These updates reflect an ongoing trend of video platforms adopting features from each other. YouTube continues to incorporate popular TikTok features, like live video previews in the Shorts feed, while TikTok has extended the length of its videos.
