Should points be transferred?

We only recommend transferring points or miles if you plan to use them short-term. Many programs have been devaluing over the past few years, so any speculative transfer is likely to be a losing proposition.

The transfer is irreversible, and you don’t want to be stuck with thousands of points or miles in a program you rarely use.

If you don’t have specific redemption intentions but still want to earn points or miles, you’re better off earning rewards through credit card welcome bonus and daily expenses.

Bottom line

When a program with a transferable currency offers transfer rewards, it’s important to run the numbers to see if it’s worth it.

In general, you won’t want to transfer your points or miles without specifically intending to redeem them. After all, much of the value of transferable points and miles comes from their flexibility — flexibility that you give up as soon as you convert them to your partner’s currency. However, transfer rewards can help you get more value from your points and miles if you use the partner program frequently or plan to redeem them early.
